Po Lin Monastery – Hong Kong’s Hideout for the Famous Giant Buddha Statue

Home to a mammoth Buddha statue, the Po Lin Monastery is a true revelation of the cultural side of Hong Kong. The Po Lin Monastery itself is the most popular Buddhist monastery in the country and attracts not only worshippers, but also streams of tourists that pour in to view this historic site. Its name translates as Precious Lotus and is located on the Nkong Ping Plateau on Lantau Island.

This top tourist destination was built in 1924 and was initially a small temple shrine known as the Big Hut. In 1930, many more halls and a larger temple were added to the Po Lin Monastery and it became the residence of several monks. Upon visiting the monastery, you will be able to stroll through numerous halls in its sanctuary such as the Hall of Ti-tsang Bodhisattva, the Sutra-Collection Hall, the Da Xiong Bao Dian and the Banruo Hall. Many of them contain stunning statues and structures.

The most attractive statue to be seen when visiting the Po Lin Monastery is that of the Tian Tan Big Buddha situated on top of a pedestal on the Muyu Mountain near the monastery. Known for being the world’s biggest outdoor Buddha Sculpture, this statue stands at an impressive height of approximately 34 meters and depicts Lord Buddha in a meditation pose. Within the pedestal itself are three exhibition halls that are worth a visit to understand the history and nature of the Buddhist culture. The Gongde Hall holds a statue of Ti-tsang Bodhisattva, whilst the Fajie Hall contains a wooden book that records events of past bodhisattva discussions. The Sakyamuni Memorial Hall is where the relic of the Sakyamuni is revered by many local people. Am Exhibition Hall also found onsite holds a historic bell that has engravings of Lord Buddha and other writings, and is rung everyday at regular intervals.

On a regular basis, a Buddhist Relic Exhibition is held at the monastery that allows visitors to view some important artifacts and items of the Buddhist faith. You will also be able to delight yourself in some exceptional vegetarian specialties at this mountainous and picturesque monastery.

Hong Kong is filled with many interesting and cultural sites that are a must see for all tourists holidaying here like that of the Po Lin Monastery. Visitors looking for elegant and comfortable hotels in Hong Kong from which to explore the city can ideally stay at a Kowloon hotel. One such hotel is the Langham Hong Kong hotel which is a preferred choice by many due to its central location and relaxing environment in the heart of Hong Kong’s tourist district.

According to legend, it was at Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnic when Waylon Jennings drunkenly promised a nobody named Billy Joe Shaver that he’d record a whole album of his songs. Apparently it wasn’t until Shaver threatened physical violence on Jennings (in front of a Nashville studio full of people) that he finally made good on his promise, although Jennings had only recently been granted …
